Wesley is an off-spring of Washington St. M.E. Church which was dedicated in June of 1842, and became the Mother of Methodism in this area.
• January 18, 1845 Andrew S. Holderby and Henry B. Montague for the sum of $500.00 sold to William Clark, James Mc D. Anderson, Allen Archer, Daniel Lyon, Thomas Branch, Beverly Drinkard, William Brownley, Lewis Mabry and D'Archy Paul -- all trustees of Washington Street Church, "a certain parcel of land situated on Halifax Road." On this site the first House of Worship was erected and dedicated -- Wesley Methodist Episcopal Chapel. From 1850 - 1853 the same minister served both churches.
• October 29, 1879 Wiley C. Wyatt and Algerena D. Wyatt donated the site at the corner of Halifax and Hickory Streets, now Mistletoe Street, on which to erect a new church building.
• Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church South was didicated.
• The building was razed.
• June 26, 1901 The cornerstone was laid for the new church building. Dr. John Hannon was the speaker.
• Februay 8, 1904 The new chuch building was dedicated. Dr. William H. Atwill, beloved former pastor, delivered the dedicatory sermon. This building is still there.
• September 26, 1929 The house adjacent to the church on Halifax Street was bought from W. R. Turner and Georgia A. Turner, his wife, by William R. Wood, George D. Jones, Daniel E. Alley, William L. Kohler and John W. Grigg, trustees of Wesley Church. This building became the Sunday School Annex.
• Spring of 1960 Wesley Church began holding Sunday School and Worship Services in North Elementary School in Colonial Heights in addition to the services on Halifax Street in Petersburg. The pastor was Reverend Clarence England.
• June 6, 1960 The present site (3-acre cornfield) on the east side of Conduit Road in Colonial Heights was purchased from Peter W. Covington by the trustees of Wesley, who several months later purchased another acre of land from Mr. Covington.
• October 1961 The Wesley Church property on Halifax Street in Petersburg was sold to the Third Baptist Church for $25,000. The total congregation then worshipped in North Elementary School in Colonial Heights.
• March 25, 1962 A ground-breakng ceremony for the first phase of the present building was held. The District Superintendent, Reverend J. Aubrey Hughes, presided.
• November 18, 1962 The first service was held in the new multi-purpose Fellowship Hall amid a downpour of rain. About 275 persons attended the service and a reception followed. Reverend James Rush was pastor.
• February 1965 The second phase of the church building plan was consecrated by Bishop Walter C. Gum. Additional land was bought on the north side of the church building and on the east end of the parking lot.
• Wesley U. M. Church was debt-free under the pastorate of Reverend Robert Rose with the slogan of "debt free in '73".The Fellowship Hall, being used as temporary sanctuary, was renovated, installing pews and carpet.
• April 29, 1984 The ground-breaking ceremony was held for the permanent sanctuary. Reverend Bill Betts was pastor.
• February 3, 1985 Dedication of the permanent sanctuary was held with 328 in attendance and Reverend Norwood Montgomery, pastor.
